When you are first taking the leap into photography, it can be daunting and difficult to know what to choose. Choosing the correct camera body and lens is very difficult and an expensive investment. I studied the different capabilities and technical specifications extensively before making a decision and I ended up picking a Canon Rebel T1i. It ended up being the wrong choice.
I have found the best question to ask yourself to help guide you is this: What are you looking to achieve? Are you looking to take this seriously really develop a craft? If so, go straight to high end, full-frame. Conversely, if you’re the type of person who will be happy with some decent shots and all-around capability, get a decent crop-sensor camera, or just get better with your phone.
If you’re still reading this, I will assume you are in the first category or person. I always recommend the 50mm F1.8 lens to start. This lens will teach you the basics and gives you, by far, the best image quality for the least amount of money. I would recommend this lens regardless of if you choose a crop-factor body or a full-frame body. See the 50mm F1.2 lens post for details on focal length (but slightly more expensive version of this lens).
